Defining "Enough" Money

By the BestAppsMade editorial team · Published 2023-10-05

Breaking free from the endless pursuit of more by finding your financial baseline.

One of the most profound questions you can ask yourself is: What is enough? We live in a culture that defaults to "more." More salary, more revenue, more square footage. But pursuing "more" without a definition of "enough" is a recipe for lifelong anxiety.

The Cost of More Additional income can involve tradeoffs in time, stress, or relationships. If you do not define what "enough" means for you, it can be easy to trade more time for money that may not meaningfully improve your life.

Defining enough isn't about limiting your ambition; it's about shifting your ambition from accumulating wealth to accumulating freedom.

Calculating Your Baseline To figure out your "enough," you need to separate your actual desires from societal expectations. Do you actually want a luxury car, or do you just want reliable transportation and the respect of your peers? Do you need a massive house, or do you just want a comfortable space to host friends?

Look at your current spending. Identify the purchases that actually bring you joy versus the ones you make out of habit or status anxiety. Once you know how much your ideal—but realistic—lifestyle costs, you have a concrete target.

Practical Prompt Write down your ideal Tuesday. Not a vacation day, just a regular Tuesday. Where do you wake up? What do you eat? Who do you see? What kind of work do you do? Now, estimate how much that lifestyle actually costs per year. It is often less than you think.
