Choosing a Career Direction

By the BestAppsMade editorial team · Published 2023-10-01

How to pick a path when you have too many options—or none at all.

When it comes to choosing a career, we are often paralyzed by the idea that there is one perfect path. We imagine that if we just reflect hard enough, the clouds will part and our "true calling" will be revealed. In reality, clarity comes from action, not just introspection.

The Myth of the "One Right Path" Many people spend years feeling stuck because they are searching for a career that fulfills every need: high income, perfect work-life balance, immense societal impact, and endless personal passion. This is an impossible standard. Most successful, satisfied people built their careers through a series of pivots, adjusting as they learned what they actually liked doing day-to-day.

Instead of looking for the ultimate destination, look for the next logical step. What is an area that interests you enough to spend the next two years learning about it?

Follow Your Energy, Not Just Your Passion Passion is notoriously fickle. It wanes when work gets hard. Energy, however, is a better compass. Notice the tasks that leave you feeling energized rather than drained. Do you enjoy organizing chaos? Do you like mediating conflicts? Do you find satisfaction in making something visually beautiful, or logically sound?

These core activities can be applied to dozens of different industries. If you focus on the verb of what you like doing, rather than the noun of the job title, your options open up significantly.

Practical Prompt Write down three moments in the past year when you were completely absorbed in a task. What were you doing? Now, look at that list. What kind of jobs involve doing those things on a daily basis?
